The scarcity of qualified experts on the Czech labour market is sheer bliss for Czech graduates. Companies are converging on universities and competing for the best they have to offer. Besides these excursions and other programmes focusing on the target group of university students, every April almost forty leading employers also take part in the virtual job fair Online Graduates Month (OGM) at www.jobs.cz.
‘This is the eighth year that Jobs.cz will be a virtual meeting point for thousands of students and fresh graduates actively interested in their future career and an opportunity for employers to show their wares,’ says Eva Havlíčková from LMC, the company organizing the OGM. ‘Last year, around 20,000 people participated in the online discussions, making it the largest event of its kind on the Czech Internet.’
Students are attracted to the event because, under a cloak of anonymity, they can openly ask HR officers about the working conditions at particular companies. They are generally most interested in the starting salary, benefits, promotion opportunities and foreign placements. They also often ask about foreign-language requirements, as though they are worried about being tested at the recruitment interview. Not least, they investigate the tasks to be performed in particular jobs.
For companies, the biggest draw is the effort made by www.jobs.cz to address students in technical fields, who tend to be less actively communicative than, say, students at economics-focused colleges. Many vacancies in technical professions and sectors remain unfilled. With this in mind, one of the OGM’s long-standing partners is the student organization IAESTE, which is active at technical universities.
